Only two managers have been back to manage the club after they left - Arch Anderson and John Murphy, both probably mostly being remembered for their first stints at the club - especially John Murphy who received some fairly unsavoury treatment from sections of the WR crowd on his return - they do say "never go back".
Some more of the names on the list enjoyed two spells at the club, but only once as a manager in their own right - Graham Allner was at the club in the 1980's when he was assistant manager and Dave Lewis had, if I remember two stints as caretaker manager to follow on from his very succesful career as a player.
Jim Barron has returned to the club in recent times and currently coaches the goalkeepers at Whaddon Road. The most famous 'old boy' to return though was of course Steve Cotterill - a Cheltenham born lad - he played for the Robins in the 80's before playing for Wimbledon in the old first division. Murphy himself also played for the club before coming manager.
Anyone choosing their favourite manager during the post war period would I feel be forced to choose between Steve Cotterill, Arch Anderson, John Murphy, Bob Etheridge and Dennis Allen. On the other hand there have been a few 'flops', notably Willie Penman (signed as a player manager but never played due to registration problems), Ally Robertson and Tommy Cavanagh.
